There are more than 800 species of leeches in the world, but in Turkey there are only 3 species of leeches, which are medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis).
Unlike other leech species, only the medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are used in treatment because they secrete biologically active substances. Ordinary leeches have no therapeutic effect.
