Side Effects of Leech Therapy

There may be mild bleeding in the leech application point after the session, which may continue for a day. This will go away with a good compress, bandaging, rest and cold application.

Sometimes there may be slight redness and bruising at leech application points. This also goes away after a few days.

Sometimes there may be an increase in lymph glands (lymphadenopathy) near the area of the treatment, but this is temporary.

A slight itching in the area where the leech is applied may occur. This is temporary and will go away with a cold compress.

It is to be expected that these effects will be observed during the treatment.

Side effects of leech therapy have not yet been identified. If the treatment is carried out with medical and one-time leeches, the occurrence of side effects is avoided.
